» END OF TRANSMISSION_
This was the first full-length audio that came to us from El barco del arroz after the first signals received through shortwave. It’s an audio documentary (we think we can call it that) that starts with the incredible cyclical migration of the monarch butterfly, but flies well beyond. The culture related to the natural phenomenon, the precariousness of the communities living in the area, the protection of the forests, the memory of the ancestors, clandestine logging, the problems surrounding environmental activism in Mexico… Everything is there, gravitating around the concentration of enormous colonies of insects that dye a relatively small territory orange after travelling across much of North America. And they do not choose just any date, as they arrive precisely at a deeply emotional moment for all Mexicans.
Although we remain completely clueless about this navigating antenna (we don’t even want to imagine how it came to transmit from the mountains of Michoacán), with the story of the butterfly and the people of El Rosario we are already beginning to intuit what kind of messages we can expect from it: the ship wants us to listen to voices and sounds from our world that lead us to discovery and, hopefully, to reflection.
